  • Program background: The U.S. Embassy Cotonou Public Diplomacy Section (PDS) of the U.S. Department of State announces a Request for Statements of Interest (RSOI) from organizations interested in applying for funding for program proposals that strengthen ties between the peoples of the United States and Benin through cultural and exchange programming that highlights shared values and promotes bilateral cooperation.  PDS invites organizations interested in potential funding to submit SOI applications outlining program concepts that reflect this goal.
  • Program Objectives: Investigative Journalism: Activities that link Beninese journalists to American journalists or media institutions, and/or empower community radios with best practices to handle an adversarial debate, and/or develop tools and skills to combat myths and disinformation and to verify information before sharing with the public in order to strengthen free press and journalism as an institution in Benin.  Target audience:  community radios, mid-career journalists.

  • Program background: The U.S. Embassy San Jose Public Diplomacy (PD) Section of the U.S. Department of State announces an open competition for organizations to submit a Statement of Interest (SOI) to implement cultural or educational programs that strengthen ties between the United States and Costa Rica.  A SOI should include cultural, exchange, and outreach activities that promote shared values and people-to-people ties between the United States and Costa Rica.  The thematic areas for the projects must be aligned with Public Diplomacy priorities and the strategic goals of U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica detailed below.
  • Program Objectives:
    • Programs that promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility including but not limited to: skills building programming,  awareness-building, cultural programming, sports, countering gender-based violence, or educational opportunities.
    • Programs that promote shared Unites States and Costa Rican values through English language learning, the arts, music, sports, entrepreneurship, STEAM education, and university preparation skills.
    • Activities that foster long-term student and academic collaboration between U.S. and Costa Rican universities, technical schools, and community colleges, particularly in the fields of STEAM, semi-conductor workforce development, and English language teaching.
    • Activities that increase media literacy and/or combat the spread of disinformation.
  • NOTE: The submission of the Statement of Interest (SOI) is the first of a two-step process for successful proposals.  Applicants must submit a concise one to two-page Statement of Interest that clearly communicates program ideas, objectives, target audiences, and a general budget overview.

All proposals must state clearly the inclusion of American content.

    • Climate Change Resiliency: Programs promoting resilience and sustainability include those aimed at developing and increasing the use of clean, renewable sources of energy; programs that address global health challenges; focus on increasing and ensuring food and water security; promote economic sustainability; promote and protect critical ecosystems and biodiversity; or implement global climate initiatives.
    • Press / Freedom of Expression, program(s) that strengthen and increase the audience share, self-sufficiency, and resilience of independent media organizations toward mis- and disinformation and cyber threats. to reduce portions of underserved communities and socially marginalized groups that rely on mis/disinformation, support critical thinking, and strengthens social governance.

  • Program background: Through Democracy Indicators Monitoring Survey 4 (DIMS4), the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Bureau of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), Office of Regional Sustainable Development (RSD), Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance (DRG) aims to support citizen-responsive governance and democratic development with rigorous public opinion research on democratic norms, attitudes, and experiences in the LAC region.
  • Program Objectives:
    • Collect statistically rigorous, cutting edge public opinion data surveys that are inclusive, related to key democratic attitudes and behaviors, contribute to long-term trend analysis, and are relevant for all stakeholders in informing policy and regulation decisions around democratic issues ;
    • Disseminate data, analysis, and research about democratic norms and attitudes in LAC;
    • Innovate by supporting and developing topics and methodologies in public opinion research and analysis; and

Journalism

First Opportunity

  • Program background: Conduct research in applicant’s area of specialization. Proposals must be feasible with respect to the applicant’s qualifications and language abilities, as well as the proposed time frame. It is expected that the research will result in a tangible product appropriate to the grantee’s particular field of journalism (for example, a series of articles, a television program or a series of radio stories on some facet of Japan). The product should be described in some detail in the project statement. During the grant period, grantees are welcome to generate periodic articles or reports, but they are not allowed to serve as a regular correspondent for either a U.S. employer or, if there is one, their Japanese affiliate.
  • Program Objectives: The purpose of this award is to provide opportunities for both junior and senior journalists working in print, broadcast and digital media to become better informed about Japan.
  •  NOTE:
    • Scholars selected for the award will be required to conduct a research project of the applicant’s choosing and conduct a professional and/or artistic project.
