Danny Ghitis second in Hearst competition
May 2006 graduate Danny Ghitis came in second place during the Hearst Intercollegiate Journalism National Championship Shoot-Out in San Francisco June 6-10, 2006. He won $4,000 and became the fifth UF photojournalism major to make it to the finals. The college’s photojournalism program placed fifth in the program championship.
Ghitis qualified earlier as one of 12 semi-finalists following his fourth place finish in round one of the competition, coordinated by associate professor John Freeman. In May Ghitis submitted a complete portfolio and the national list of 12 students was cut to six photojournalists, who flew to San Francisco the day after being notified. Professor John Kaplan and staffers at The Gainesville Sun also assisted Ghitis throughout the entry process. Ghitis is now interning at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel in Ft. Lauderdale.
