Alum bequeathing New York condo to UF
The hot housing market is helping build the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications’ academic programs. Former Mobil Corporation Executive Television Producer Judy Lynn Prince is bequeathing her $850,000 Manhattan condo, which she bought in 1974 for $35,000, to the institution that awarded her a bachelor’s degree in 1964.
By the time it’s realized, the college expects the condominium to be “extremely valuable,” said Director of Development Rebecca Hoover. “We are very grateful to Judy Lynn for her loyal and generous support of the College. This is a wonderful gift that will strengthen our program significantly. However, we hope to receive it a very long time from now.”
The college plans to sell the condo and use the money to establish the Judy Lynn Prince Professorship(s) Endowment fund, Hoover said. Professorships pay for professional development of faculty members, including money for travel and graduate assistants.
Prince, who made a separate $1 million bequest in 1997 to the college, lives in Washington, D.C. but often stays at the Manhattan condo, from which she can see the East River.
“It’s a perfect apartment,” said Prince, who chairs the UF Foundation Board of Directors’ Communications/Public Relations Advisory Council. “I go up there twice a month. I have fabulous memories from there. Current memories, too.”
Prince, an alumna of distinction of the college, became president of the Smithsonian Women’s Committee this month. She serves on the Board of Trustees for Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington; Board Trustee for Arena Stage; Women’s Heart Board of the Nation’s Capital; and National Advisory Council for the Theatre Communications Group. She is also a member of the College’s Board of Advocates.
The College is a national leader in the professional education of future journalists and other communications practitioners. Nationally accredited, it has programs in advertising, print and broadcast journalism, public relations, and telecommunication production and operations, as well as graduate-level programs in science/health communication, documentary, media law, political communication, international communication, and other specialties.
