Three advisory councils visit the College this week
The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications is welcoming the telecommunication, public relations and journalism advisory councils this week for class presentations, panel discussions, networking sessions and more.
“This is an opportunity for students to meet with professionals from all levels,” Department of Telecommunication Chair David Ostroff said. “Whether they just graduated or have been in the industry for 30 years, they will have something to offer these students.”
Advisory council members are alumni and friends of the College from around the country who volunteer to meet with students and faculty during the fall and spring semesters.
The Telecommunication Advisory Council will speak to classes on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday night, UF’s chapter of the National Broadcasting Society will hold a roundtable discussion to allow students to ask council members questions about the broadcast industry. Before adjourning on Wednesday, council members will meet one-on-one and have lunch with Management, News and Production students.
The Public Relations Advisory Council will begin its visit on Thursday. Council members will visit classes in the morning and hold a networking session with PRSSA members Thursday night. On Friday, the advisory council’s visit will culminate a panel discussion, “The Impact of the Economy on the Public Relations Profession: Employment, Long-Term Effects and What We’ve Learned,” in the Gannet Auditorium at 10:40 a.m.
The discussion, led by John Deveney, president of Deveney Communications in New Orleans, is open to all UF students and faculty.
The Journalism Advisory Council will hold a meet and greet for students from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday in room in 3032 Weimer Hall, followed by a presentation on the news coverage of the earthquake in Haiti by council members from The Miami Herald, the Associated Press and MSNBC. The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. On Friday, the advisory council will hold an open portfolio and résumé critique.
Each council will also meet with Dean John Wright and David Carlson, executive director of the College’s new Center of Media Innovation + Research.
Students and faculty may visit the telecommunication, public relations and journalism department offices on the second floor of Weimer Hall for more information on the advisory councils and this week’s agendas.
