Some Gators’ dreams became reality at this year’s Public Relations Student Society of America National Conference when the University of Florida’s Alpha Chapter was selected to host the 2011 Conference in Orlando, Fla.
Chapter President Erika Zayas, along with PRSSA members Jordan Barrish and Edward Bennett, traveled to Washington, D.C. to present the UF 2011 Conference bid. The 45-minute presentation marked the final step in an extensive bid process, which began in May 2010. Guided by Chapter Adviser, UF public relations professor Deanna Pelfrey, the bid centered around the proposed Conference theme, “Perception is Reality: Inspiring Effective Communication.” The UF team convinced the 16-member PRSSA National Committee that its Alpha Chapter was best suited to host the 2011 Conference.
A committee of UF College of Journalism and Communications public relations students created a bid that highlighted the way public perception is reality for public relations professionals in the field. The nearly 50-page document outlined a strategic plan for the Conference, and capitalized on Orlando’s reputation as a magical place where visitors escape reality and enter a world of fantasy.
Due to the audience-driven nature of public relations, the Conference will focus on the importance of understanding public attitudes and behaviors. And, the Conference will feature diverse programming, including communication in entertainment, tourism, sports, health care, government, international and crisis management.
The Conference will be staged at the Renaissance Orlando Hotel at SeaWorld from Friday, Oct. 14, 2011 to Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011. To complement the program of speakers and professional development sessions, attendees will have the opportunity to explore the city through scheduled excursions.
The University of Florida Alpha Chapter of PRSSA was one of nine original chapters created in 1968, making it the oldest and most valuable public relations organization at UF. The Chapter seeks to build a professional organization that fosters positive and lasting relationships through a collaborate approach between its members and leadership.
