University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications launches Association of Women in Sports Media chapter
The UF College of Journalism and Communications has a new student chapter of the Association for Women in Sports Media – AWSM@Florida. AWSM is a support network and advocacy group for women who work in sports writing, editing, broadcast and production, as well as public and media relations. The organization includes more than 600 industry professionals, both men and women, and students pursuing sports media careers.
AWSM works to promote and increase diversity in sports media through an internship/scholarship program, which has placed more than 100 female college students in paid internships since 1990, as well as through mentoring links and career-enhancement initiatives. Annually the organization honors individuals who have paved the way for women in sports media and offers assistance to those who encounter roadblocks on the trails yet to be blazed.
AWSM@Florida currently has 20 student members from the College. Senior Kaylee Glyder is president and Eric Esterline, UF CJC and College of Health and Human Performance lecturer in sports production/communications, is the faculty advisor.
