Recent Grad Spotlight: Jonathan Perez
Jonathan Perez began his sports media career as a student here at the University of Florida. As an undergraduate student, he worked hard to channel his inner beat writer while covering games. This led him to anchor sports for the First at Five newscasts and work with GatorVision to develop his production skills.
Feeling prepared after graduating in Fall 2015, Jonathan participated in interviews with a variety of news stations. Even with those stations turning him down, Jonathan did his best to follow the advice given to him in preparation for the job search: be patient. Once he was offered the job with his current station, he had no doubt in his mind that it was meant for him.
Since his days at UF, Jonathan has fulfilled his dreams in Georgia. As a sports reporter and weekend anchor for 13WMAZ in Macon, he reports during the week and anchors the sportscast on the weekends. Covering everything from practices to press conferences, Jonathan has been able to immerse himself into a community that is so passionate about their sports teams. Since his news station is in the heart of the state, he is able to cover college teams at the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech as well as professional teams like the Atlanta Falcons, Hawks and Braves. Jonathan wants students to know that the only way to find a career is to try. Apply for internships and get involved in as many opportunities as possible. In his own words, “we have resources available that other universities and other students dream of, so take advantage of them”.
