UFCJC Student Honored in National Hearst Television Feature Competition
Danielle Prinz, a University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Telecommunication senior, has placed 11th overall in the 2017 Hearst Journalism Awards Program Television Features category. In addition, the College tied with the University of Kansas for ninth place overall based on points accumulated from student entries in the Intercollegiate Broadcast Competition.
Students from 56 schools and universities across the country submitted multiple entries for judging. Prinz’s entries included three medical features broadcast on WUFT-TV in 2016: “50 Surgeries & Counting” featured a Marion County teen needing frequent surgical procedures to keep him alive and help him grow; “Joey’s Wings” chronicles a mother’s art display at UF Health Shands in tribute to the son she lost to cancer; and “Healing with Horses” offered a behind-the-scenes look at horse therapy and how it is benefitting a child with cerebral palsy.
The competition was judged by a panel of award-winning broadcast professionals including Harvey Nagler, recently retired Vice President, Radio, CBS News; Lloyd Siegel, former Vice President of News Partnerships, NBC News; and Fred Young, retired Senior Vice President of News, Hearst Television Inc.
The 57th annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program is held in 106 member universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs. The Broadcast News Competition was added in 1988 to the program which also includes writing, photojournalism, and multimedia competitions and offers awards totaling up to $500,000.
