CJC Ties for Fourth Overall in the Hearst Intercollegiate Competition
The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications has tied for fourth overall in the 2017 Hearst Journalism Awards Intercollegiate Competition. The high placement was a result of CJC student journalists receiving 15 individual awards.
The Hearst program holds year-long competitions for journalism undergraduates in writing, photojournalism, broadcast news and multimedia. Journalism schools accumulating the most points earned by their students in each category are designated the winners of the Intercollegiate Competitions.
CJC received fourth place in the Intercollegiate Multimedia category, fifth place in the Intercollegiate Broadcast Radio and Television category and sixth in Intercollegiate Photojournalism. Overall CJC received enough points to tie for fourth overall with the University of Missouri.
The National Championships will be held May 29 – June 2 in San Francisco and CJC student journalists Caitie Switalski, Drea Cornejo and Maggie Lorenz will compete in the Radio, Multimedia News and Television News categories, respectively.
The Hearst Journalism Awards Program operates under the auspices of the accredited schools of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication. It is fully funded and administered by The William Randolph Hearst Foundation. Currently, 106 accredited undergraduate schools of journalism in the United States are eligible to participate in the program, which awards up to $500,000 in scholarships and grants annually. The Intercollegiate Awards have been acknowledged since the inception of the program, and in 1990 monetary awards were added to the Hearst Journalism Awards Program budget.
