Clay Calvert Serves as Panelist at Constitution Day Event
Clay Calvert, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Brechner Eminent Scholar in Mass Communication and director of the Marion B. Brechner First Amendment Project, recently participated in the Cato Institute 16th annual Constitution Day Symposium in Washington, D.C. Calvert was part of the First Amendment Challenges panel discussion and focused on the 2017 Supreme Court decision in The Slants lawsuit Matal v. Tam.
In the presentation, Calvert explained that the Asian-American band, The Slants, was denied a trademark on their name because it was deemed disparaging. Calvert stated that the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the band and reaffirmed two principles: government cannot censure speech because people find it disagreeable or offensive, and government cannot take sides in viewpoint based discrimination.
