Andrew Selepak Comments on Recent Twitter Account Purges
Andrew Selepak, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications director of the online Master’s program with a specialization in social media, comments in “Nonsense to Accuse Twitter of Targeting Conservatives, Social Media Expert Says,” published in Humber News on Feb. 23.
The article focuses on Twitter’s attempt to eradicate fake and automated bot accounts. Conservatives have accused the social network of wrongfully blocking their accounts and perceive there is a deliberate political bias against them. Selepak asserts that Twitter’s move is fundamental in the battle against fake news.
“There is no absolute right to free speech on social media,” said Selepak. “Twitter, as essentially a private company, can determine which accounts violate their user agreements. Different entities including foreign governments will continue to find ways to spread false information on the web, and new technology will only make it easier.”
