CJC Master’s Student Pens Op-Ed on the End of Net Neutrality
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Master’s student Joshua Schery is the author of the opinion column, “The Reality of Living Without Net Neutrality,” published in The Gainesville Sun on May 1.
Schery focuses on the official end of net neutrality that occurred on April 23. He quells the notion that its demise will bring a doomsday scenario. He offers a few key factors broadband customers need to be aware for their new relationship with their internet provider. Those factors include loss of transparency, required disclosure of future practices, and awareness of peak usage hours. Customers should also be aware of the possible formation of smaller internet service providers who will be exempt from necessary disclosures.
“Unfortunately, many broadband companies have proven themselves to be unethical when regulations are not in place. While it may be years before many of the prophesized repercussions can come to pass, the customers should do all they can to prevent these issues from happening,” said Schery.
