Andrew Selepak Comments on How to Repair a Compromised Online Reputation
Andrew Selepak, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications director of the online Master’s program in social media, was quoted in “How Brands Can Repair a Battered Online Reputation,” published on CMSWiRE on May 3.
The article focuses on the need for companies to have a crisis plan in place in the event their online reputation is compromised. Selepak advises that the plan should include a point person for public communication and details on how the crisis will be handled across all forms of owned media. He says good customer relations are important and that devoted customers can be a brand’s strongest defenders especially in online forums.
If a crisis does occur, covering up is a mistake and hoping it will go away will only make it worse.
“Flood cyberspace with publicity that shows the brand in a positive light to push out the negative. Once a crisis goes online, it stays there and that information is available for any potential customers to find through a simple Google search,” said Selepak.
