CJC Doctoral Student Pens Commentary on Anonymous Speech
Austin Vining, a University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications doctoral student, is the author of “I’m Not Throwing Away My Shot (At Protecting Anonymous Speech)” published in the Orlando Sentinel on Aug. 27.
In the commentary, Vining discusses First Amendment protection for anonymous speech. He cites challenges to the protection of protesters donning masks by anti-masking laws in some states. He suggests that if someone has an issue with anonymous speech or masked protestors they should avoid the speech altogether or engage in counter speech.
According to Vining, “if not for anonymous speech, our Constitution — our nation — may not exist. Our country’s framers knew firsthand its importance and amended the Constitution to protect it. Now, will you join the fight?”
