Justin Tyler Comments on CJC Student Radio Immersion Opportunities
Justin Tyler, WRUF-FM brand manager, was quoted in “Radio’s Young Blood Infusion” published in Country Aircheck on Sept. 24. The article focuses the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Media Properties and hands-on learning opportunities for students.
In the article, Tyler provides an overview of the public and commercial broadcasting stations within the College and the student immersion opportunities that are available. He speaks about the popularity of radio among the students.
“The excitement for the medium is there,” said Tyler. “They [the students] still listen to radio for hours every week, often for its personalities. I was warned that they probably wouldn’t know any because they only want to hear the music, but that is not true.”
Tyler also provides insight into the student radio station GHQ, a non-commercial multi-media platform Top 40 format developed in partnership with technology provider Futuri Media, where students occupy every staff position. CJC Telecommunication students Abby Murphy and Samantha Reddit also shared their experiences while working at the CJC Media Properties and GHQ.
“I’d say 50 percent of students in the program were intrigued by radio before they came in, and another 50 percent saw the campus radio station and thought they’d give it a try” said Tyler. “What’s fun is seeing them step back and say, ‘Wow, I can actually make this a career when I graduate.”
