Amy Jo Coffey Pens Article on Television Station Ownership and Diversity
Amy Jo Coffey, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Telecommunication associate professor and director of the online master’s program in Audience Analytics, is the author of “Challenging Assumptions about Ownership and Diversity: An Examination of U.S. Local On-Air Television Newsroom Personnel” published in the International Journal of Media Management on Jan. 4.
The article features the results of Coffey’s study on the effects of ownership type and network affiliation on ethnic and racial diversity in U.S. television newsrooms. She compared the diversity levels of on-air personnel at network owned-and-operated stations, as well as at stations involved in Shared Services Agreements (SSA). Her findings revealed some significant positive effects for network owned-and-operated stations, but none for SSA-attached stations. She also found that network affiliate status also did not play a significant role.
