Kim Walsh-Childers Contributes to Book on Reporting on Sensitive Topics
Kim Walsh-Childers, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journalism professor, is the author of the book chapter “Reporting on Drugs, Diets, Devices, and Other Health Inventions” published in the 2019 volume of Ethical Reporting of Sensitive Topics.
The book explores the underlying complexities that journalists face when covering difficult news stories.
According to Walsh-Childers, “to be considered truly ethical in their work, journalists are required to produce accurate and complete stories that minimize the likelihood of harm, either to those about whom they are writing or to their audiences.”
She suggests that journalists review their stories to provide the audience with cost, benefits or repercussions from interventions. She adds that sources and conflicts of interest should be identified and journalists should verify that the story does not rely solely or largely on a news release.
