Two CJC Alums Receive Multiple 2019 Tony Award Nominations
Scott Sanders, B.S. Advertising 1979 and 2006 Hall of Fame, and Flody Suarez, B.S. Journalism 1983, received a total of 14 Tony Award nominations in the 2019 competition. Sanders received 11 nominations for his new musical “Tootsie,” including Best Musical. Suarez received three nominations for “The Cher Show” including Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.
Sanders, founder of Scott Sanders Productions, is an Emmy, Grammy and Tony-Award winning producer. He produced the 2016 Broadway revival of The Color Purple which went on to win the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album. He won his Emmy and first Tony Award for his work as a producer on Elaine Stritch at Liberty. His revival of Evita in 2012 received three nominations and After Midnight received seven nominations in 2013.
Suarez, former vice president of Development for NBC Television, is now co-president of Seller Suarez in New York City and president of DonQuiFlody Productions in New York City and London. At NBC, he oversaw production on the Emmy-winning series “ER,” the Emmy-nominated series “3rd Rock from the Sun,” “Just Shoot Me,” and “Men Behaving Badly.” “The Cher Show” premiered on Broadway in June 2018 featuring the life of Cher from starting out, to glam pop star to icon.
The 73rd annual Tony award ceremony will be broadcast on CBS on June 9.
