Raegan Burden Comments on the U.K. Ban on Gender Stereotypes in Advertising
Raegan Burden, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Advertising lecturer of cultural engagement, was interviewed by China Global Television Network (CGTN) on June. 24.
In the interview by CGTN anchor Rachelle Akuffo, Burden comments on the U.K.’s ban on gender stereotypes in advertising.
Burden talks about the role disparity between the way men and women are portrayed and looks at the different types of experiences people are having. She said that companies are taking a broader approach to find balance.
“It’s not so much about being in one space, it’s about being more inclusionary on how the spaces are reflected holistically,” she said.
Burden seeks to train her students to be cultural communicators. One of the parameters is to filter what is happening in everyday life.
“Whether it’s aspirational or whether it is based out of experience, advertising has very huge role in this space psychologically,” she said. “You need to see yourself in order to esteem yourself in that place.”
According to Burden, “There are different ways to make it inclusionary. But advertising is an institution and also an industry. You need a combination of creative freedom and also something that pulls against it to be more inclusionary across race and gender to give an opportunity for reflection and representation.”
