CJC Students Honored at State, Regional and National Competitions
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications students, staff and alumni have received more than 125 awards for their work in print, radio, television and online.
The Hearst Journalism Awards competition garnered two national championships for CJC. Telecommunication senior Delores Hinckley and Telecommunication junior David Jones were first place winners in the Radio Broadcast News and Television Broadcast News Championships, respectively. Three students were also chosen as national finalists. Grace King, B.S. Telecommunication 2019, and Meredith Sheldon, B.S. Telecommunication 2019, were recognized in the Television Broadcast News Championship, and Journalism senior Mackenzie Behm in the Multimedia Championship.

9th Place: Cat Gloria, B.S. Journalism 2019, (Multimedia II), Multimedia IV-Team Reporting/News
In the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) National Edward R. Murrow Awards Competition, WUFT-FM received one national award for “Overcoming Adversity Through Archery” by Meredith Sheldon, B.S. Telecommunication 2019. In the Region 13 RTDNA Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, WUFT-FM received six and WUFT-TV received two awards.
In the 2019 Florida Associated Press Broadcasters Awards Competition, WUFT-TV/FM received 33 honors in both the professional and student contests including WUFT-FM receiving overall station of the year and Delores Hinckley as Radio Reporter of the Year.
In the Region 3 National Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Mark of Excellence Competition, CJC students won 24 awards and in the four first place honors in the National SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards for Best Use of Multimedia, Online/Digital Feature Videography, Radio Sports Reporting and Radio Features. In the 25th annual SPJ Sunshine State Awards Competition, CJC received seven professional and nine student awards.
The Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Festival of Media Arts is the world’s largest digital media and broadcast competition for students and faculty. CJC students and alumni received were honored in the news and student film and video competitions. In addition, CJC Associate Director of Sports Journalism and Communications and Telecommunication Assistant Professor Roxane Coche won first place in BEA’s Inaugural Case Study Competition for her documentary “One More at the River: From MLK to BLM.”
In the Florida Society of News Editors (FSNE) Awards, CJC students won first place in the Enterprise Writing Student Division; first, second and third in Multimedia; first in Photography; and first and second in Video Storytelling.
CJC student took home three first place and five finalist honors in the NBS AERho National Student Electronic Media Awards and four National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Suncoast Student Productions Awards including a first place for Meredith Sheldon’s talent reel.
Three Advertising students collaborated to earn two awards from the American Advertising Federation Gainesville Student ADDY Awards including a Gold ADDY and Best of Show for their Greyhound Adoption Campaign.
