Clay Calvert Comments on the First Amendment and YouTube
Clay Calvert, director of the Marion B. Brechner First Amendment Project at the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, was quoted in “Conservative Group Argues First Amendment Should Apply to YouTube” published in The Wall Street Journal on Aug. 27.
The article focuses on a lawsuit filed by Prager University, a non-profit group that produces explainer videos promoting conservative ideas, against YouTube claiming that its First Amendment rights were violated when its users could only get limited access and dozens of its videos were demonetized. The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Seattle is reviewing the case.
Google claims that Pragers pursuit of a constitutional claim would have consequences for the First Amendment and online discourse.
According to Calvert, “Private censorship today is sometimes just as dangerous as government censorship.”
