Kim Walsh-Childers Co-Authors Article on Restoring Trust in Journalism Education
Kim Walsh-Childers, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journalism professor, is the co-author of “Restoring Trust in Journalism: An Education Prescription” published in Journalism & Mass Communications Educator on Feb. 25.
Childers and co-authors Katherine Reed and Kenneth Fischer studied new challenges to journalism education and ways to equip future journalists with the critical thinking and technology skills they need to produce and/or share content that is independent, accurate and fair, while developing relationships with audiences that reflect accountability, respect, and understanding.
They also found that journalists need to learn how to identify situations that call for careful consideration of audience confirmation biases and accordingly to present important information and a mix of new skills is required in the current, information environment. Educators need to show their students how to monitor, investigate and report information polluters.
