A Message from Dean Diane McFarlin
Dear Alumni:
I hope you are all faring well during these difficult times.
I wanted to give a quick update on developments at the College.
All classes will be provided online through the Spring semester and into the first Summer session. I am happy to report that the first week of online-only instruction has gone very well. Our academic advising team remains available by phone or online, as do our faculty and staff, who are providing ongoing support to our students.
The University has mandated that students return home, if they are able. Most have, which makes for a lonely campus setting. It is noteworthy that about 65 of our journalism students have continued to report remotely for the Innovation News Center, supporting our mission to keep the community informed during this crisis situation. The Alligator staff is doing the same, and was cited in an article in the Washington Post yesterday.
We also are strongly encouraging faculty and staff to work remotely, thus reducing the chances of exposure to the coronavirus. Staff members responsible for keeping our media properties on the air, however, are remaining on the job at Weimer Hall, with accommodations for “social distancing.”
Unfortunately, we have had to cancel several events, including our annual awards banquet and commencement. We are considering how to cast the spotlight on our outstanding spring graduates if a summer ceremony doesn’t seem possible.
We are doing our best to support our students, faculty and staff who are feeling a financial, physical or emotional impact. It is still early in this dramatic life shift and we are closely monitoring any situations that might arise.
Gators always unite in tough times and our common bond is a source of strength and resolve. Thanks, as always, for your support.
Warmest regards,
Diane
