Clay Calvert Comments on Lawsuits Filed Against Florida’s Social Media Anti-Censorship Law
Clay Calvert, director of the Marion B. Brechner First Amendment Project and Brechner Eminent Scholar in Mass Communication at the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, is quoted in “Lawsuit says Florida’s Social Media Anti-Censorship Law Violates Free-Speech Rights” published in The Washington Times on June 11.
The article focused on a lawsuit filed by NetChoice and the Computer & Communications Industry Association against the new Florida law that allows Floridians to sue large tech social media platforms if they’re censored and prohibits big tech companies from de-platforming Florida political candidates.
According to Calvert, the law is “politically symbolic.”
“This legislation from a big picture perspective really represents a battle between red-state Florida and a deep-blue California and Silicon Valley and the ability of big tech to de-platform conservative politicians,” he said. “Much of this was really triggered by the de-platforming of Donald Trump.”
