Roxane Coche Authors Article on Women Journalists at the 2018 FIFA World Cup
Roxane Coche, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Sports Journalism and Communication associate director and Media Production, Management, and Technology assistant professor, is the author of “Women Take Power: A Case Study of Ghanaian Journalists at the Russia 2018 World Cup” published in Sociology of Sport Journal on July 30.
Coche studied two Ghanaian journalists who were accredited for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and who both happened to be women. After the Ghana Black Stars failed to qualify for the World Cup, media outlets in the West African country decided to preserve their budget and did not send any of their reporters to Russia. The only two Ghanaian representatives in the media were freelancers.
According to Coche, “This exploratory case study shows that two Ghanaian women, who have successful careers in international sport media, are not entirely included or excluded from the male-dominated sport media industry. Sports scholars must examine countries and spaces other than Western cultures to give voice to sport media professionals who have been marginalized both in the industry and in scholarly literature.”
The Sociology of Sport Journal is the flagship journal of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport.
