Andrew Selepak Comments on Teaching Life Skills and Gabby Petito Social Media Posts
Andrew Selepak, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Media Production, Management, and Technology lecturer and coordinator of the online master’s program with a specialization in social media, is quoted in “Tiktok Schools GenZ on Personal Finance” posted on YR Media on Sept. 27.
Selepak weighed in on the knowledge being filtered down to future generations. “Universities and K-12 education often don’t teach necessary life skills, so students don’t learn how to do their taxes, invest or balance a checkbook,” he said. “Schools have traditionally looked at these life skills as things students would naturally learn over time. But with each new generation, people are not learning these skills and not passing them on to their children.”
Selepak was also quoted in “Gabby Petito Story Boosted by Social Media, True-Crime Craze” posted on the Orlando FOX television affiliate wogx.com on Sept. 21.
“It’s becoming this extension of the surveillance state where a lot of things are documented. We’ve got video footage of it. I think this is going to have a big impact when it comes to crime moving forward,” said Selpak.
“What we’re seeing again is this sort of celebrification of culture where people aren’t necessarily trying to do everything they can to help solve a crime. A lot of time they are looking for likes,” he said.
