Two UFCJC Journalism Seniors Honored in the 2021-2022 Hearst Journalism Awards Photojournalism Competition
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Journalism seniors Chasity Maynard and Lawren Simmons placed second and eleventh, respectively, in the 2021-2022 Hearst Journalism Awards Photojournalism Features and News Competition. The College currently is tied for first place with Arizona State University in the photojournalism competition.
Maynard received a $2,000 prize and qualified for the semi-final round. Her entries were from her tenure as a photography intern at the Orlando Sentinel. Simmons’ entries were from his summer internship at the Florida Times-Union. John Freeman, Journalism associate professor, and Journalism Adjunct Instructor Daron Dean coordinated the submissions with input from UFCJC Photojournalism alumni.
The photo competition included 101 entries from 56 universities. The second-through-fifth place winners, along with the top finalists, will submit additional photographs for the next round of competition in April. The final Intercollegiate winners will be announced after the Photo II competition.
The 62nd annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program added photojournalism to the competitions in 1970. The program also includes five writing, one audio, two television, and four multimedia competitions offering up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends.
