Roxane Coche Authors Book Chapter on Sports Celebrity and Spectacle
Roxane Coche, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Sports Journalism and Communication associate director and Media Production, Management, and Technology assistant professor, is the author of a chapter in the book The Circus is in Town: Sport, Celebrity and Spectacle published on Jan. 4.
The book editors, Lisa Doris Alexander and Joel Nathan Rosen, tasked contributors with examining reputation from the perspective of celebrity and spectacle, which in some cases can be defined as scandal.
In her chapter, Coche uses characters from “The Lion King” to explain the life and legacy of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team’s first modern star, Michelle Akers. She explains how Akers managed to do what few imagined possible: make Americans care about women’s soccer.
