Andrew Selepak Comments on the Launch of the New ‘Truth Social’ App
Andrew Selepak, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Media Production, Management, and Technology lecturer and coordinator of the online master’s program with a specialization in social media, is quoted in “Trump’s ‘Truth Social’ App Launches on IOS” broadcast on NTD Evening News on Feb. 21.
The story features former President Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, which is now available at the Apple App Store. The launch occurred about a year after he was banned from Twitter and Facebook.
“Truth Social, much like Parlor, is supposed to be the platform that allows for more free speech, but you still cannot incite violence and you still can’t have certain content that is offensive,” said Selepak.
Selepak is not sure to what extent the app will moderate the content and voices. He feels that it will be nice to have a competing property.
“This app has two differences from other social media companies. One is that the former president will be on it and the second biggest difference is that unlike other social media platforms it does not actually work,” he said. “If they are having this much trouble getting people to sign on and create an account compared to actually running the account, well, that’s the easy part. A lot remains to be seen in terms of how Truth Social will end up and how it will perform.”
