Andrew Selepak Comments on the Impact of Slumping Digital Advertising Sales on Tech and Social Media Companies
Andrew Selepak, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Media Production, Management, and Technology lecturer and coordinator of the online master’s program with a specialization in social media, is quoted in “Slumping Digital Advertising Hurting Social Media, Tech Platforms’ Bottom Lines” posted on thenationaldesk.com on Oct. 27.
The story focuses on disappointing earnings figures for several of the largest tech and social media companies due to decreased spending on digital advertising.
“It’s kind of unknown, uncharted territory when it comes to all of this,” said Selepak. “All we know is that we’ve seen revenues decrease dramatically for these companies and we know that they’ve made announcements about being more deliberate moving forward with hiring less employees, less people working at these companies.”
According to Selepak, “The areas that are most likely to be affected by the cuts will be innovation and content moderation, which is already a sore spot for social media platforms after the coronavirus pandemic and 2020 election brought on a slew of misinformation. The upcoming midterm elections will be an immediate test to how companies deal with misinformation when it comes to politics after the contentious presidential election brought on complaints from both sides of the aisle over how content was moderated.”
