Six UFCJC Students to Compete in 2022-23 Hearst Journalism Awards National Championship
Six University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Journalism students have qualified to compete in the 2022-23 Hearst Journalism Awards National Championships on June 2-8 in San Francisco.
Journalism senior Alexis Ashby, who placed second in Multimedia 2 Innovative Storytelling and Audience Engagement with “Behind the Bet: Stories of Illegal Sports Betting on the University of Florida’s Campus,” has now qualified to compete against the winners of the Multimedia I and 3 competitions in the National Multimedia Championship. The first-place winner in this category chose to compete in the Photojournalism category allowing Ashby to move to first-place.
Journalism senior Avery Lotz, who placed third in the Multimedia 2 competition with “Unsecured Guns and Unintended Death: A Preventable Epidemic,” has accumulated enough points in the Multimedia competitions to also qualify for the National Multimedia Championship.
Journalism junior Chris Will and Journalism senior Ophelie Jacobson will compete in the National Television Championship. Journalism senior Katie Delk and Anna Guber qualified for the National Writing Championship. Delk, who originally placed third in the Explanatory Writing Competition with “Solutions on the Half Shell,” moved to first place when the first and second place winners were no longer eligible to compete due to graduation.
The National Championships will feature finalists from the writing, photojournalism, television, audio and multimedia competitions. They will have the opportunity to compete for additional awards of up to $10,000 in on-the-spot assignments.

The Journalism Awards Program, now in its 63rd year, includes two photojournalism, one audio, two television, and four multimedia competitions. The program offers up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends. 105 member universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs are eligible to participate in the Hearst competitions.
