UFCJC Student Journalists and Alums Honored in 2022 FABJ News Awards Competition
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) student journalists were honored in the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists (FABJ) professional and college competitions for content produced in 2022.
In the Professional Competition, the winners and finalists include:
- Radio Newscast: Winner, Serra Sowers, “The Point Newscast”
- Feature: Cultural/Historical: Finalist, Katie Hyson, M.A.M.C. 2020, “Black Owned Farms are Disappearing, One Alachua County Man is Fighting to Preserve What’s Left”
- Weather Reporting: Series: Winner, Jack Prator, “Hurricane Ian Coverage”
- Digital Programming: Winner, Katie Hyson, M.A.M.C. 2020, “The Eastside Band”
In the College Competition, which includes both television and radio, the winners and finalists are:
- Newscast: First place, Serra Sowers, “The Point Newscast: Nov. 29, 2022”
- General Assignment: First place, Julia Cooper, “Pride Center of North Central Florida Building Vandalized”
- Public Affairs: First place, WUFT News Team, “Surviving Ian”
- Radio News Anchor: First place, Serra Sowers
- Television News Anchor: First place, Ophelie Jacobson, “Hurricanes to Homecoming”
- Sportscaster: First place, Chris Will
- Hard Feature: First place, Jack Prator, ”Sunken Homes”
- Education Reporting: Finalist, Macie Goldfarb, ”Another One Drives the Bus”
- Feature: Cultural/Historical: First place, Christina Pugliese, B.S. Telecommunication 2022, “Jim Crow and the Coast”
- Sports Reporting: Finalist: Chris Will, “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party”
This is the fourth annual competition for FABJ, formerly known as Florida Associated Press Broadcasters. The professional competition received more than 650 entries from more than 55 radio and television stations. The college competition included more than 60 entries from more than 14 Florida-based college and university broadcasting programs.
During the event, Journalism seniors Jake Reyes and Macie Goldfarb were each awarded a $1,000 FABJ Scholarship. The scholarships are designed to support the next generation of broadcast journalists by fostering skill-building opportunities.
The awards were presented to the winners and finalists at the FABJ Gala on April 22 at the Rosen Centre Resort in Orlando.
