Seven UFCJC Students to Compete in 2022-23 Hearst Journalism Awards National Championship
Seven University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) students have qualified to compete in the 63rd annual Hearst Journalism Awards National Championships, the greatest number of competitors from any participating college. The competition will take place from June 2-8 in San Francisco.
UFCJC finalists include:
- Writing: Katie Delk and Anna Guber
- Photojournalism: Lauren Witte
- Television: Ophelie Jacobson and Chris Will
- Multimedia: Alexis Ashby and Avery Lotz
The 2023 contest features 30 journalism students representing 14 universities from across the country who will compete in the National Writing, Photojournalism, Audio, Television and Multimedia Championships. The finalists were selected from 1,303 entries received in this year’s 14 Intercollegiate competitions.
UFCJC finished second overall in the Intercollegiate Competition, including third in Audio & TV, third in Multimedia, fourth in Writing, and seventh in Photojournalism categories.

During the National Championships, the finalists will fulfill assignments selected by judges in each category. They will compete for scholarship awards of $1,500 to $10,000.
Currently, 105 colleges and universities with accredited undergraduate journalism schools are eligible to participate in the annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program. Funded and administered for 63 years by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, the Journalism Program awards up to $700,000 in scholarships, grants and stipends annually.
