Amy Jo Coffey and Doctoral Student Receive 2023 AEJMC News Audience Research Paper Award
Amy Jo Coffey, Ph.D., University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Media Production, Management, and Technology associate professor and program manager for the online Master’s in Audience Analytics, and doctoral student Chris DeFelice are the recipients of one of two Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) 2023 News Audience Research Paper Awards.
Their paper, “News for the Ages: An Examination of Trust Factors by Generational Cohort,” examines the relationship between age and news media trust and reveals statistically significant differences between generational cohorts.
According to the authors, “Younger news consumers are paying greater attention to sources within stories, and the oldest news consumers are paying the least. Younger news consumers also view factors used in evaluating the trustworthiness of news stories as more important than the older generations, suggesting greater skepticism or discernment.”
The award, along with a $1,000 cash prize, will be presented at the “Celebrating 10 Years of News Engagement Day” panel session at the AEJMC 2023 Conference in Washington, D.C. on Aug. 7.
