Rachel Grant and UFCJC Doctoral Student Present at AJHA 42nd Annual Convention
Rachel Grant, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Journalism assistant professor, and doctoral student Ernest Makata participated in the American Journalism Historians Association (AJHA) 42nd Annual Convention in Columbus, Ohio, from Sept. 28-30.
Grant was a member of a panel discussion on “Black Power to Work: This Historical Evolution of Black Racial Consciousness in Black Media.” The panel traced how the Black press/media has shaped social movements, such as Black Power and Black Lives Matter, through language, imagery and advocacy to gain mainstream momentum and resistance.
Makata presented his paper, “Anticipation and Celebration of Victory: The Chronicling of Nigeria’s Path to Independence” during the International/Transnational Conflicts and Coverage paper session. His research focuses on social media as democratization instruments and digital activism in modern African society.
AJHA seeks to advance education in mass communication history. The annual convention features panel discussions and research paper presentations that focus on raising historical standards and ensure that scholars and students recognize the vast importance of media history and apply this knowledge to the advancement of society.
