Herbert Lowe Co-Hosts Workshop on the “UFxFAMU1963: Reporting from the Civil Rights Trail” Documentary
Herbert Lowe, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Journalism senior lecturer, served as a co-presenter during the Broadcast Education Association’s (BEA) On-Location event at the University of South Carolina School of Journalism and Mass Communication from Oct. 19-21.
Lowe and Mira Lowe, dean of the Florida A&M School of Journalism & Graphic Communication, presented during a workshop titled “Making Magic Happen on the Civil Rights Trail: The UF-Florida A&M Story.” During the session, attendees watched a screening of the 25-minute documentary, “UFxFAMU1963: Reporting From the U.S. Civil Rights Trail.”
The Lowes and two other advisers took 11 students from both colleges on an eight-day, 2,800-mile trip through Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee during spring break in March 2023. The documentary and a companion news website premiered in May 2023.
The discussion afterward focused on the presenters’ teaching and administrative experiences at their respective institutions – and particularly the model of a traditionally white institution and historically Black institution teaming to facilitate learning about media and race through journalism.
