UFCJC Student Places in the Top 20 in 2023-2024 Hearst Photo II Picture Story/Series Competition
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Journalism freshman Madilyn Gemme received 14th place in the 2023-2024 Hearst Journalism Awards Photo II Picture Story/Series competition. The contest included 88 entries from 54 schools submitted in the second and final photo competition of the year.
Gemme’s winning photo story, “A Glance at Reality for Gainesville City Commissioner-at-Large Reina Saco,” was her final project in UFCJC Journalism Associate Professor John Freeman’s fall 2023 Photographic Journalism class. She is a staff photographer at The Alligator and her winning photo gallery was published online at alligator.org on Feb. 4.
According to Freeman, “Gemme’s set of pictures was not just extraordinary, she told a meaningful story about an immigrant rising through the ranks to become a politician in Gainesville while also balancing her new life as a mother.”
