UFCJC Student Honored in 2023-24 Hearst Journalism Awards Television News Competition
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Journalism senior Chris Will received 10th place in the 2023-24 Hearst Journalism Awards Television News Competition. There were 76 entries from 43 schools submitted in the second television competition of the academic year.
Will entered two news stories, “A Small Town on the Gulf Coast Braces for Idalia’s Impact,” which featured Steinhatchee residents preparing for Hurricane Idalia and how the community came together ahead of the storm. The second story was Remembering Tiffany Sessions, 35 Years After Her Disappearance.” This piece detailed a mother’s unending quest to find her missing daughter.
In this year’s Television 1 competition, Will received seventh place. In the 2022-2023 Hearst Journalism Awards Television Features Competition, he received first place and was a finalist in the National Television Championship.
UFCJC placed fourth overall in the Intercollegiate Broadcast Competition based on accumulated student points from the Audio News/Features, Television Featured and Television News contests.

The Journalism Awards Program, now in its 64th year, also includes two photojournalism, one audio, two television, and four multimedia competitions. The program offers up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends. 105 member universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs are eligible to participate in the Hearst competitions.
