UFCJC Student Places in the Top 20 in the 2023-24 Hearst Multimedia Digital Journalism Competition
Serra Sowers, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journalism senior, has tied for 20th place in the 2023-24 Hearst Journalism Awards Multimedia Digital Journalism competition. The contest included 68 entries submitted from 40 schools in the third multimedia competition of the year.
Her winning entry, “Meeting Mary Jane: How does Florida feel about marijuana ahead of 2024 election?,” featured a mother and daughter sharing their experiences gaining medical marijuana cards in Florida.
Sowers’ has qualified as an at-large participant in the 2023-24 Hearst Journalism Awards Multimedia Championship in San Francisco from June 1-7.

The 64th annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program includes five writing, two photo, one audio, two television, and four multimedia competitions offering up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends. Currently, there are 105 universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs are eligible to participate in the Hearst competitions.
