UFCJC and FAMU Student Journalists Honored in 2023-24 Hearst Multimedia Team Competition for “UFxFAMU1963”
Seven University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) and four Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) School of Journalism & Graphic Communication student journalists were honored in the 2023-24 Hearst Journalism Awards Multimedia Digital News or Enterprise Team Competition. Their entry, “UFxFAMU1963,” received 11th place.
The 11-member team consisted of UFCJC students Jennica Clerveaux, Paris Coughlin, Sydney Johnson, Taylor Mayer, Sandra McDonald, Gabriela Rodriguez and Serra Sowers and FAMU students Akiva Bell, Brianna Luberisse, Aiyanna Summerlin and Peryonna Sylvester. Their multimedia presentation featured their 2023 spring break trip to report across the U.S. Civil Rights Trail to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the movement.
UFCJC Journalism Senior Lecturer Herbert Lowe and Innovation News Center Senior TV Manager Kalisha Whitman served as advisors for the multimedia project.
The 64th annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program added multimedia to the competition in 2010. The program also includes five writing, two photojournalism and four multimedia competitions offering up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends. There are 105 universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs are eligible to participate in the Hearst competitions.
