UFCJC Alumna Qualifies for 2023-24 Hearst Journalism Awards Multimedia National Championship
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications alumna, Serra Sowers, B.S. Journalism 2024, will be one of 29 competitors representing 17 universities from across the U.S. who will compete in the 64th annual Hearst Journalism Awards Writing, Photojournalism, Audio, Television and Multimedia National Championships from June 1-7, 2024.
Sowers, who served as anchor and reporter for WUFT-TV’s “WUFT News First at Five” and series producer for the WUFT-FM “The Point” podcast, will be one of five competitors in the National Multimedia Competition. She placed fifth in Multimedia Narrative Storytelling and 11th in the Multimedia Digital News or Enterprise Team contest for “UFxFAMU1963.” Sowers will be accompanied by UFCJC Journalism senior lecturer Herbert Lowe.
The finalists include eight writing finalists, six photojournalism finalists, five audio finalists, five television finalists and five multimedia finalists, selected from 1,315 entries received in this year’s 14 monthly competitions.
During the Championships, held in San Francisco, the finalists will fulfill assignments selected by the judges and will compete for scholarship awards of $1,500 to $10,000.
