The new concentration is designed to provide working journalists or students wishing to further their education with the latest reporting, writing and technical skills for traditional journalism, digital media and various genres of storytelling across a variety of multimedia platforms.
Courses are designed to teach students how to:
- Apply the principles of free speech and a free press
- Master the latest reporting, interviewing, storytelling, writing, editing and technical skills for journalism, digital and social media
- Practice professional ethics and collaboration in the pursuit of truth, accuracy and fairness
- Analyze historical and current information to identify key events, trends and potential stories
- Provide editing, evaluation, coaching and helpful feedback to improve writing for publishing
- Relate theories of mass communication to current topics in digital journalism and storytelling
“In this era where journalism remains such an important function of our society, we recognized the need for a graduate program that could equip students with advanced journalism, storytelling and reporting skills,” said Ted Spiker, UFCJC Journalism Department chair. “We’re excited that the program is ready to launch, and we look forward to working with graduate students to best support the mission of journalism.”
UFCJC, regarded by its peers as one of the top programs in the country, offers an online Master’s in Mass Communication degree with seven concentrations — Digital Journalism and Multimedia Storytelling, Digital Strategy, Global Strategic Communication, Public Interest Communications, Public Relations, Social Media and Web Design — and four graduate certificate programs – Audience Analytics, Global Strategic Communication, Social Media and Web Design.
