Rachel Grant Comments on the Effective Use of Social Media by Kamala Harris and Her Campaign Team
Rachel Grant, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journalism assistant professor, was quoted in “Kamala: the ‘brat:’ Harris’ Campaign Launches for Voters Biden Lost” published in the Spanish newspaper El Confidencial on July 29, 2024.
The article, published in Spanish, focuses on how presumptive Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ team is using social media to connect with younger voters who did not feel represented by Joe Biden.
According to Grant, many young voters feel they can finally support a candidate who speaks to them.
“It is clear that Harris’ arrival has reinforced the perception among young voters that this is a historic choice, and they are highly involved in it,” she said.
“Kamala has always had a very strong presence on social media. Whether in the 2020 election or as part of the Biden team, she has used these platforms a lot to interact with her audience,” said Grant. “The fact that the initial jokes and memes were created by her opponents, but then appropriated by her campaign, demonstrates her and her team’s ability to develop effective mobilization strategies.”
