Sylvia Chan-Olmsted to Retire from UFCJC at the End of Fall Semester
Sylvia Chan-Olmsted, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Media Production, Management, and Technology professor and director of consumer media research, will retire at the end of the fall 2024 semester after 27 years at the College.
During her tenure, Chan-Olmsted was the Al and Effie Flanagan Professor in Journalism and Communications, the College’s director of media consumer research since 2015, and served as an affiliated researcher with the Consortium on Trust in Media and Technology since 2019. She was the associate dean for research from 2006-2012, the graduate coordinator from 2002 to 2006, and she served on various College committees including Curriculum Development/Revision, Faculty Welfare and Development, Tenure and Promotion, Research, Affirmative Action, Graduate, Doctoral Application Review and Commencement.
In addition, Chan-Olmsted was a Provost Fellow in 2006 and principal investigator and executive director of the Study of the United States Institute on Journalism and Media from 2007-2010. In Spring 2017, she was one of the inaugural recipients of UF’s term professorships recognizing academic achievements and supporting the University’s preeminence initiative, and in 2013 she received a UF Research Foundation Professorship.
Chan-Olmsted has been at the forefront of consumer media research and media economics scholarship. Her achievements include:
- Receiving the 2014 Journal of Media Economics Award of Honor, a biennial international honor considered a lifetime achievement award recognizing significant scholarly contribution and inspiration to the field of media management and economics. She was the first U.S. female to be recognized by the global academic award.
- Being a pioneer scholar in the media economics and management field and the adviser to many outstanding scholars in media management around the world.
- Collaborating with many industry partners in studying emerging industry issues and challenges that help both consumers and practitioners in the U.S. and Europe identify what’s next and how they can best approach the changes.
- Receiving research grants from industry leaders and public institutions, including Meta, Google and the National Science Foundation.
- Publishing numerous articles that established the foundation and set the agenda in media strategy and consumer media behavior studies.
Since 2010, Chan-Olmsted has authored or co-authored more than 58 refereed journal articles, more than 87 research conference papers, four books and 14 book chapters. Her future plans include tending to a farm in the Berkshires, working on AI-related nonprofit projects and traveling.
