Rachel Grant to Serve as Panelist for the American Journalism Historian Association Conference
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journalism Assistant Professor Rachel Grant will be one of five panelists for “The Pittsburgh Courier: Chronicling Black Activism Across the Decades” at the American Journalism Historians Association (AJHA) conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 4.
During the panel, she will present her paper, “Saving Black Womanhood During the Cold War: The Free the Ingrams Campaign,” which focuses on the Courier’s role during the Cold War period and how the newspaper used the Ingram Family campaign to position Black womanhood to be the face for civil rights.
The newspaper and the NAACP raised money for the legal defense of Rosa Lee Ingram and her two sons after they were charged for killing their white male neighbor who harassed and assaulted Mrs. Ingram during an altercation on their property in 1948.
Since it’s inception, The Pittsburgh Courier has looked for ways to advocate for Black causes and raise public awareness of injustices and inequalities in American life.
AJHA, founded in 1981, seeks to advance education and research in mass communication history. Members work to raise historical standards and ensure that all scholars and students recognize the vast importance of media history and apply this knowledge to the advancement of society.
