Seven UFCJC Fresh Take Florida Students and Recent Graduates Receive Pinnacle College Media Awards
Seven University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Fresh Take Florida student journalists and recent graduates received Pinnacle College Media Awards from the College Media Association.
The Pinnacle College Media Awards honor the best college media organizations and individual work. The annual contest is open to student work produced for any college media organization, including print, broadcast and online outlets, during an academic year. Fresh Take Florida is a news service producing investigative and political content on Florida state government by UFCJC student journalists.
The Division 1 honorees include:
- Best General News Story: First Place, Jared Teitel, B.S. Journalism 2024, and Sandra McDonald, B.S. Journalism 2024, for “Florida Cracking Down on Cyber Stalking with Apple AirTags, Other Hidden Tracking Devices”
- Best Breaking News Story: First Place, Jack Lemnus, B.S. Journalism 2023, for “Idalia Survivor of Storm’s Fury Near LandFall: ‘Don’t Ever Want to Go Through That Again’”
- Best News Package: Honorable Mention, Erina Anwar, B.S. Journalism 2024, for “Coverage of Florida’s Ban on Social Media for Youth.”
- Best Multimedia Story: Honorable Mention, Journalism junior Lauren Brensel, Jimena Romero Guzman, B.S. Journalism 2024, and Journalism sophomore Sydney Johnson for “When Private Pilots Falter, Air Controllers Are Saviors of the Skies.”
The College Media Association, founded in 1954 as the National Council of College Publications Advisors, now has more than 600 members nationwide. It provides education, research and resources to student media professionals and staff members.
The recipients were recognized at an awards ceremony at the Sheraton New Orleans during the 2024 Associated Collegiate Press/College Media Association Fall National College Media Convention from Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
