Olivia Bullock to Receive NCA Political Division Outstanding Article Award
Olivia Bullock, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Advertising assistant professor, and five co-authors will receive the Michael Pfau Outstanding Article Award from the National Communication Association (NCA) Political Division at the 2024 NCA Convention in New Orleans from Nov. 21-24.
The article, Predicting Vote Choice and Election Outcomes From Ballot Wording: The Role of Processing Fluency in Low Information Direct Democracy Elections” was published in Political Communication on June 23, 2022.
In the article, Bullock and Ohio State University scholars Hillary Shulman, Matthew Sweitzer, Jason Coronel, Robert Bond and Shannon Poulsen designed a study to explain and predict how people make decisions in low-information political environments.
According to the authors, “We found compelling support for the notion that metacognitive feelings guide decision-making within this domain and that communication features, independent of communication content, can guide these experiences. We hope these findings can be used to inspire future work into how communication and processing fluency can explain how people make decisions that affect everyday life.”
The purpose of the NCA Political Communication Division is to support the work of scholars and practitioners engaged in the research, teaching and practice of political communication. The award is given to the author or authors of an outstanding scholarly essay that must be published within a two-year period preceding the annual convention.
