UFCJC Student Documentary ”March of the Mangroves” Wins 2024 NATAS Suncoast Chapter Regional Emmy Award
The documentary “March of the Mangroves” by Sophia Abolfathi, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Media Production, Management, and Technology senior, received a 2024 Regional Emmy award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Suncoast Chapter.
The film, one of three winners in the topical documentary category, tells the story of Florida coastal residents and communities who are now beginning to accept, adapt to and protect the vital mangroves. The documentary premiered on WUFT in May 2024.
Abolfathi has also won numerous awards for her documentary “A Seat at the Table,” which explores how food, health and nutrition divide two sides of the city of Gainesville, Florida, and how the movement to bring Black culture, history and knowledge back to the table is healing the community.
WUFT was the presenting station for and Emmy awarded to music composer John Gottsch for his work on “Ocklawaha: Tales My Father Told.” The film is a symphonic tale about boyhood memories on the Ocklawaha River and will be released for national distribution to public media stations in March 2025.
The Suncoast Emmy Awards honor the best television produced in Florida; Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles and New Orleans, Louisiana; Mobile, Alabama; Thomasville, Georgia; and Puerto Rico.
