In Memoriam: James Terhune
James Terhune, former University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) senior associate dean, passed away at age 84 on Dec. 30 in Gainesville. He retired from UFCJC in 2003 after a 36-year tenure as a professor and administrator.
Terhune joined the UFCJC faculty in 1967 to teach classes in Advertising Research Techniques and Public Opinion Theory and Advertising, among others. During his tenure, he served as chair of both the Advertising and Public Relations Departments before becoming senior associate dean, a position he held for 17 years. He was also the longest-serving editor of the Communigator, the College’s alumni publication.
His accomplishments were recognized by a UF Superior Performance Award in 1999 and a Silver Medal Award from the American Advertising Federation for his lifetime dedication to advertising education and the industry.
Prior to joining the College, he worked as a legislative research assistant for the Lt. Governor of Indiana from 1963-64 and director of publicity for Taylor University in 1962. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Taylor University and a master’s and Ph.D. from Indiana University.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Jan. 7 at 11 a.m. at Westside Baptist Church, 10000 W. Newberry Road, Gainesville.
