From Dream to Reality: My Transformative Journey with CJCxNYC
Kennedy Chambers participated in the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications’ CJCxNYC Immersive Fall 2024 program. She secured a “Today” show internship for the 2024-2025 academic year when she learned she’d been accepted to the program.
Immersed in the Heart of NYC
When I first heard about the CJCxNYC program, I couldn’t have imagined how much it would shape not only my academic experience but my personal growth. The opportunity to live, learn and intern in the media capital of the world felt like stepping into a dream I’d had since I was a child. I’ve always envisioned a life surrounded by stories, creativity and connection. CJCxNYC made that vision come to life.

A Front Row Seat to Industry Insights
One of the most impactful aspects of this program was visiting some of the most renowned organizations and learning directly from their leaders. From stepping inside Google’s NYC headquarters to understanding brand storytelling at Chobani and learning the art of public relations from HUNTER, every visit offered invaluable insights into the industry.
These experiences emphasized the importance of networking. The advice I heard repeatedly was that building genuine connections and nurturing them is so important in this industry. This advice was simple but profound. Relationships matter more than anything, and the ability to grow and maintain your network is often the key to success.

Professional Growth in a Thriving City

Having the opportunity to intern at the “Today” show alongside the CJCxNYC experience was nothing short of extraordinary. I stepped behind the scenes of one of the most iconic morning shows in the country. From creating research packets for high-profile guests like Anna Kendrick and Dwayne Johnson to assisting with special production shoots, each day presented a new challenge and a chance to grow.
The cherry on top of my semester was being part of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! Working behind the scenes of this iconic event was a surreal moment that I’ll never forget. It perfectly encapsulated the magic of this program—bringing childhood dreams and professional goals together in the most memorable way.
A Personal Connection to the Program
What made this program even more special was the bridge it helped me build between my past and present. Fast forward to today, and I’m interning with the same show that inspired me all those years ago. It’s a full-circle moment that still feels surreal.

Beyond my internship, the program also allowed me to explore my interests in fashion, entertainment and broadcast news. Just being in the city I was constantly immersed in opportunities that fueled my passions.
Lessons Learned Beyond the Classroom
While the professional opportunities were incredible, living in NYC taught me just as much personally as it did professionally. Balancing an internship, coursework and navigating the city was challenging but rewarding. Time management and adaptability have become second nature, and I’ve discovered that being resourceful is one of the most valuable skills you can have in New York.
One of the biggest takeaways? It’s okay to ask for help. Whether it’s leaning on professors, classmates or coworkers, no one achieves success alone — and that’s especially true in a collaborative field like communications. Being a young professional can be difficult and overwhelming, especially in such a fast-paced city like New York. Reminding myself how hard I worked to get here and what I was working toward always helped me to refocus and not stress too much about the small things.
Advice for Future Participants
If you’re considering CJCxNYC, here’s my advice:
- Say yes to every opportunity. Whether it’s an unexpected project at work, a networking event or an invite to hang out with a new friend, never know where a single experience might lead.
- Build your network. Relationships are the foundation of any career. Take the time to connect with people authentically and stay in touch. Do not feel embarrassed to send that LinkedIn message!
- Stay curious. NYC is a city full of stories waiting to be told. Let your environment inspire your work.
Looking Ahead
As I reflect on my time with CJCxNYC, I feel immense gratitude for the people I’ve met, the lessons I’ve learned and the experiences that have shaped me. This program has been more than an academic or professional opportunity – it’s been a life experience that will stay with me forever.
For anyone wondering if this program is worth it, my answer is absolutely! Whether you’re a student seeking hands-on experience, an agency considering a partnership or an organization curious about connecting with future professionals, CJCxNYC is an incredible opportunity to collaborate, learn and grow.
As my journey continues, I’m excited to see what the future holds for me. However, I am certain about one thing: this city and this program will forever be a part of my story.
